REPS
REPS is turning roads into powerplants, by efficiently generating green electricity from lost energy in traffic. Their first live "Road Energy Production System" went operational in November 2025, and has already been validated by 85,000+ heavy trucks under real-world conditions. They’re starting with roads (~$400bn annual electricity market), and then unlocking the $1T+ global energy-harvesting opportunity.
About the Tech
There are two well-known solution approaches in the field of energy harvesting: piezoelectric effects and dynamo principles.
Piezoelectric systems fail due to a simple physical limitation. The deformation of the crystals that induces voltage occurs only within the micrometer range. Energy yield is always linearly dependent on displacement, regardless of the efficiency or durability of the energy converter. Ultimately, the limitation is rooted in a fundamental physical principle.
Dynamo principles, on the other hand, require translational motion to be converted into rotational motion. Mechanical friction components wear out, especially under the high frequencies and masses encountered in road traffic environments.
Furthermore, in order to fully convert the impulse of a vehicle, a dynamo must either:
a) Spin for approximately two minutes. In that case, when the next impulse arrives after, for example, ten seconds, it cannot efficiently convert additional energy because it is still processing the previous impulse.
b) Use multiple dynamos, which quickly becomes economically unattractive.
c) Be configured for stronger resistance, resulting in shorter spin times, but creating an extremely inefficient performance range across varying vehicle masses.
d) Combine multiple approaches, which again becomes economically unviable.
e) and so on
Our best energy converters, developed through more than 100 years of research, fail in terms of efficiency and durability once they are removed from application fields where constant forces are acting and placed into environments characterized by irregular, high-magnitude impulses occurring at unpredictable intervals.
They have developed a mechanism based on the world’s first permanent magnetic bearing. In combination with electromagnetic induction, this means the system operates with virtually no mechanical friction and therefore does not suffer from conventional wear. At the same time, impulses ranging from 1 to 40 tons within 0.07 seconds can be converted with high efficiency.
This does not only mean that a profitable business model becomes possible. It means that they have unlocked the key to the field of energy harvesting, with the potential to radically and positively transform both the energy crisis and the climate crisis.
